Hamburg's tallest building has not been accessible to visitors since 2001. The Heinrich Hertz Tower, built in 1968 and 279 metres high, had been closed due to asbestos contamination and had to be completely renovated. In addition, it had lost all function due to technical advances. In a project development with a Danish partner, a possibility was sought to reactivate it and make it accessible to the public again.
The design envisages the tower's mast being encased by a hotel. The hotel, whose façade is completely glazed and stabilised by a steel cage, reaches up to 200 metres. Above this, the steel lattice mast with the mounted radio and television transmission antenna begins. But for many Hamburg residents, the complete encasement of the listed tower was too drastic. The original landmark would then disappear completely, the reason given in the explanatory statement.
